Title

Type 1 Diabetes Genetics Consortium

Description

The Type 1 Diabetes Genetics Consortium is a group of diabetes researchers from around the world who have come together to collect samples and information from families with Type 1 diabetes. The consortium is trying to discover how differences in genes that we inherit from our parents contribute to the risk for development of Type 1 diabetes.

Eligibility

This research study is looking for 1600 new African American or Mexican American families with one child with Type 1 Diabetes throughout the world, and 2050 African American or Mexican American people with Type 1 Diabetes and 2050 ethnically matched controls.  We expect to enroll approximately 100 families at Stanford. A patient with type 1 diabetes must have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes before the age of 35, and they must have begun using insulin within six months of diagnosis.

Procedures

We will take some blood and ask you some questions about your diabetes and your health. Your blood will then go to scientists where they will study the genes in the cells of your blood. The blood will be prepared in such a way that you do not need to come back in the future.
